Discussions Not To Have With Your Coworkers

Often people become friendly with their co-workers to the point where they share too much personal information.  Many times, this information can spread through the office and may give your employer or managers preconceived notions about you or your ability to perform your job. Here are some topics you should avoid discussing in the workplace regardless of whom you are discussing them with.

Political discussions should never be part of the workplace according to experts in this field.  Your personal political feelings could sway decisions about your future if upper management adheres to a different philosophy.  If you try to use the worksite as a place to convince your co workers to change their affiliations there could be pushback and stress on the job.

People at your work could be left wondering about your performance if you bring home life issues into work.  Talking about these things at work also permits them to be able to see what part of your personality is less strong and may lead to less authority for you.

Similar to politics, religious conversations should always be avoided in the workplace as many people feel strongly about their religion.  There are many people at each worksite so there will always be those who have diverse religious upbringings, which is why your views should not be shared.

Health is another touchy subject that should not be part of workplace conversations according to career experts.  If you have a situation where you must be absent or need special accommodation then it is appropriate to discuss with your employer.  Otherwise you run the risk of your employer hearing these things and then trying to decide if you will be able to complete your work assignments.
